Sunday morning sensory-friendly hours at the Kamin Science Center with lowered lighting, adjusted sound, accessible activities and a quiet space for neurodiverse visitors.
Kamin Science Center (formerly the Carnegie Science Center) is running Sensory Sensitive Science Hours on select Sunday mornings from 9 AM to noon, with dates listed for Oct. 18, Nov. 15, and Dec. 13, 2026. It's a version of the museum tailored for visitors who are autistic or neurodiverse, have cognitive, developmental or physical disabilities, or sensory sensitivities.
Across the museum's five floors, the environment is dialed down: exhibit lighting is lowered, and sound effects are either adjusted or cut entirely. Staff and volunteers run accessible hands-on activities, and the Buhl Planetarium, the Demonstration Theaters, and the animal habitats all have low-sensory versions of their shows. Early entry helps cut down on wait times, and there's a Quiet Space with fidget toys, beanbag chairs and calm music for anyone who needs a break. Sensory backpacks and noise-cancelling headphones are lent free of charge.
It's worth remembering what you're working with here. Kamin is Pittsburgh's most visited museum, and these hours open up the same exhibits you'd find on any other day: the Miniature Railroad & Village, the Science of Speed kart track, the USS Requin Cold War-era submarine, the Buhl Planetarium, and the Sports360 exhibition. The difference is the atmosphere—the lights are lower, the noise is managed, and the staff is prepared for a different pace.
