Melvin Seals and JGB play Thunderbird Music Hall, with opening set by David & Pappy from the Pittsburgh jam band theCAUSE.
Melvin Seals & JGB play Thunderbird Music Hall on Tuesday, October 20. The bill features Seals as the main act, with David and Pappy from the Pittsburgh jamband theCAUSE opening the night.
For those who know the name but not the history, Melvin Seals is a Hammond B-3 organist, producer, and arranger whose sound has become a staple of the jam band world. He spent 15 years as a core member of the Jerry Garcia Band, joining in 1980 and helping define its soulful, genre-blending style, which drew deep from gospel, blues, and R&B. After Garcia died in 1995, Seals took over as bandleader and formed Melvin Seals & JGB, carrying the music forward without treating it as a tribute act. He still tours, playing high-energy shows.
Opening the night are David and Pappy, two members of the local Pittsburgh jamband theCAUSE. They'll play a set of Jerry Garcia and John Kahn numbers, so the whole evening stays in that same orbit. It's a double bill that keeps the focus on the Garcia songbook from start to finish.
