Claudio Simonetti's Goblin play their film scores live with a screening of Dario Argento's 'Tenebre' on the Tenebre Tour.
Claudio Simonetti's Goblin play Thunderbird Music Hall on Thursday, October 22, as part of their Tenebre tour. The night is built around a screening of Dario Argento's 1982 slasher Tenebre, with the band performing the score live alongside it. After the film, they'll play a set of their best-known hits and themes, each paired with clips from the movies they came from.
If you're not familiar with the name, Goblin started as an Italian progressive rock band called Cherry Five, with Genesis and King Crimson as their main influences. They made their mark writing soundtracks for Dario Argento, first coming in to replace Giorgio Gaslini on Profondo Rosso (1975), where they rewrote the score and left behind one of the most famous themes in cinema. Their nerve-jangling experimental sounds and bizarre vocals became their signature, and they went on to score Argento's Suspiria (1977), the European version of George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead (1978), and Nonhosonno (Sleepless) (2000). Composer Claudio Simonetti, whose work on those films and Demons still informs the horror genre, now fronts the band.
This particular tour celebrates Tenebre, Argento's 1982 classic, so that's the film you'll see on screen with the score played live. The second half of the show brings in the hits from across their career, each set to its own cinematic counterpart. It's a double bill of sorts: the full score of one film and a retrospective of their wider work, all tied to the movies they were written for.
