Concert by the Oakland-based electronic project Beats Antique, featuring Middle Eastern traditions, hip hop, and dubstep, with guest performer Māh Ze Tār.
Beats Antique play Thunderbird Café & Music Hall on Saturday, October 17, with Māh Ze Tār opening. It's a 21-and-over show, so keep that in mind if you're bringing a group.
If you've never seen them, the first thing to know is that this is more than just a band on a stage. The Oakland-based project is fronted by Zoe Jakes, David Satori, and Sidecar Tommy, and their live show brings in costumes, ships, masks, and shadow dances. It's a full production that asks for more than just listening.
Musically, they pull from a wide range of sources. They fuse Middle Eastern traditions with West Coast circus, underground hip hop, breakbeat brass band, downtempo, glitch, and dubstep. They describe their work as staging experiments on the fringes of cinematic cabaret, informed by electronic mash-ups. That's a lot of ground to cover in one set, and the sound changes depending on which of those threads they're pulling on at the moment.

They've worked with a diverse list of collaborators over the years, including Les Claypool, Alam Khan, The Glitch Mob, Too Many Zooz, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. That mix of funk, global sounds, and electronic production is exactly what you'll hear when they're out on stage.
Doors open at 7 PM and the show starts at 8 PM. General admission is $38.08, and it's standing room only, so come early if you want a good spot. The venue is Thunderbird Music Hall at 4053 Butler Street in Pittsburgh.
