Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf's 'gala-lite' fundraiser with a silent auction, live music, a live painter and access to the Mattress Factory exhibits.
A Night at the Museum is the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf's auction and fundraiser, taking place at the Mattress Factory on Friday, October 23, from 6 PM to 9 PM. The school calls it a "gala-lite"—a more relaxed version of its fall galas, with plenty of food and drink alongside a silent auction. You can browse the museum's exhibits while you mingle, and there are attendants and ASL interpreters on every floor.
The evening includes live music and a live painter, artist Phil Seth. The silent auction is the main draw, and the relaxed pace means you can move between the art and the bidding without feeling rushed. It's the kind of night where you can spend as much time with the paintings as you do with the people.
The venue itself is a good part of the experience. The Mattress Factory is a contemporary art museum and a pioneer of site-specific installation art. Barbara Luderowski bought a derelict Stearns & Foster mattress warehouse in 1975, and the museum achieved non-profit status in 1977, spending the next forty years drawing in installation artists. Its roof is a light art installation that forms part of Pittsburgh's Northside evening skyline, and the museum houses permanent works by Yayoi Kusama, James Turrell, and Greer Lankton. Alongside City of Asylum and Randyland, it's credited with helping to revitalize the city's Northside.
