Third edition of the self-guided historic house tour featuring six 19th- and 20th-century private residences in the Pelham and French Village sections of Mt. Airy, with knowledgeable docents at each home.
The West Mt. Airy Historic House Tour returns for its third year on Sunday, October 18, with registration starting at Commons & Commons LLP, 30 Pelham Road, Philadelphia, PA 19119. It's a self-guided, self-paced tour of six private residences from the 19th and 20th centuries, spread across the landmark Pelham section and the French Village of Mt. Airy. One thing to keep in mind: this isn't a walking tour. You'll drive or bike between the houses, so you can take your time and visit them in whatever order works for you.
At each home, a docent is on hand to walk you through its history, architecture, and the stories that come with it. They'll point out the kinds of details that are easy to miss on your own—hand-carved oak staircases, original fireplace mantels, and grand entry halls. The styles run wide, from a stately Georgian Revival mansion and elegant Colonial Revival homes to a modern European-style residence, so you get a decent sense of how the neighborhood's character has shifted over the decades.
The tour is a partnership between Mt. Airy Learning Tree (MALT), a community-based nonprofit that celebrates the diversity of Northwest Philadelphia, and West Mt. Airy Neighbors (WMAN), a member-supported nonprofit civic organization. Proceeds from the tour go to nonprofit organizations.
