Exhibition by Mexican artist Ivette Chaires that uses cartonerĂa, a traditional Mexican papier-mâchĂ© technique, to explore Dia de los Muertos.
Viviendo a Través de la Muerte is on view at Philadelphia Magic Gardens, 1020 South St., running through November 8. The exhibition is by Mexican artist Ivette Chaires, curated by PMG Exhibition Manager Chelsey Luster.
Chaires works with cartonerĂa, a traditional Mexican papier-mâchĂ© technique. The show comes through the Julia Zagar Residency for Women Artists, an initiative created by Julia Zagar, wife of the late Magic Gardens founder Isaiah Zagar, to support contemporary artists working within the traditions of handcraft and folk art, with a particular focus on women artists from Mexico and South America. The residency brings in artists from these regions to show their work in the city, and Chaires' use of cartonerĂa fits right into that folk-art lineage.
Beyond the gallery, Magic Gardens has a few other things running through the fall. They're hosting 'Twilight in the Gardens' on the fourth Friday of each month through October, and they offer guided tours and family-friendly sessions like PECO Family Jams. There are also combination tours that take you through both the Magic Gardens Studio and the Dina Wind Art Foundation/John Wind Studio, so you can see the site's broader context alongside the exhibition.
