Pop-up market by the Philadelphia artist collective Members Work, with reclaimed-material art, prints from $20, a living room and artist talks.
This Market East Pop-Up is open now through December 31 at Market East, 924 Market Street in the 900 block of Market Street. It's a pop-up market where Philadelphia artists take discarded materials and give them a second life, turning things that would've been thrown away into one-of-a-kind jewelry, furniture, and ceramics.
The show comes from Members Work, a collective of local artists who first met at the South Kensington makerspace NextFab. They all became members there and went through an Artisan Accelerator program together, and this is their second show at Market East—their first, Philadelphia @250: Living Room, also took place here. They're staging this one in partnership with the nonprofit Circular Philadelphia and the Meantime on Market pop-up series, which activates unused retail space in the city center.
Inside, the room is laid out by price, with $20 prints up front. There's also a living room and a workspace for informal artist talks, so it's as much a place to hang out as it is to browse. If you're looking for a gift that doesn't come from a big-box store, this is a good spot to find something made right here in the city from materials that would've otherwise ended up in a landfill.
