Limited-time Halloween pop-up speakeasy at Newsroom Philly that pairs Edgar Allan Poe and 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' with theatrical cocktails.
The Pumpkin Press is open through November 1 at Newsroom Philly, a Halloween pop-up speakeasy in Northern Liberties. It's a seasonal takeover of the bar, which is already known for its book-lined walls, a hidden entrance, and a sense of discovery. This time, the pop-up is tucked behind the Diet 7-Up machine.
The theme pulls from Philadelphia's spooky literary history, pairing Edgar Allan Poe with the Headless Horseman from Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The room is filled with glowing pumpkins, candlelight, seasonal foliage, antique details, ravens, and a hidden black cat. General manager Alicia Gray says the idea is to bring autumn to life through theatrical cocktails and autumn nights hidden in plain sight.
The location adds to the atmosphere: Newsroom sits near the Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site, the only surviving Philadelphia home in which Poe lived during the years he spent in the city from 1838 to 1844. So the Poe connection isn't just for the theme—it's practically in the neighborhood.
