Semiquincentennial exhibition with more than 120 rare documents and artifacts tracing the Declaration of Independence's global journey from 1776 to the present.
The Declaration's Journey is open now at the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia, taking over the first-floor gallery. It's a centerpiece of the city's Semiquincentennial, the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, and it traces the document's global reach from 1776 to the present. The premise is that more than 100 nations have woven its ideals into their own independence movements, so the exhibition looks at the Declaration as a living thing that traveled far beyond American shores.
To tell that story, the museum has brought together more than 120 rare documents, works of art, and artifacts from around 50 lenders, some as far away as Chile. The whole thing is laid out in four color-coded chronological chapters, so you can follow the timeline as it unfolds. It opens with two pieces of seating side by side: the Windsor chair Thomas Jefferson is believed to have used while drafting the Declaration here in Philadelphia, and the steel prison bench from the Birmingham jail where Martin Luther King Jr. wrote his Letter from Birmingham Jail. That pairing sets the tone for the rest of the show.
As you move through, you'll find a printing press central to Chile's path to independence, a military uniform and drum that belonged to Mexican revolutionary Vicente Guerrero, Elizabeth Cady Stanton's desk, and an early LGBTQ+ Pride flag signed by Gilbert Baker. A four-minute film runs at the center of the gallery, and the museum has built in accessibility features like a tactile book with Braille excerpts and ASL translations of the exhibition films.
