Bilingual workshop with artist Ivonne Pinto GarcĂa and the Philadelphia Folklore Project on DĂa de Muertos traditions and decorating sugar skulls.
Ivonne Pinto GarcĂa leads a sugar skull workshop at the Parkway Central Library on Tuesday, October 27, from 5:30 to 7 PM. It's part of the library's Culinary Literacy series, and the Philadelphia Folklore Project is helping run it. The session is presented in Spanish as a bilingual workshop, so you'll hear both Spanish and English throughout the evening.
The workshop is open to teens and adults, and it's built around the traditions of DĂa de Muertos. You'll start by learning about the holiday and the role sugar skulls play in it, then move on to the hands-on part: decorating pre-made, dried sugar skulls. GarcĂa will also show how to make a richly decorated calavera from the ground up, so you can see the process from start to finish. The session makes a point that with proper care, these calaveras can last for years and become part of your annual Day of the Dead decorations, rather than just something for one season.
