Weekly Tuesday chess club for children of all ages and skill levels at the Tacony Library, with boards and pieces provided.
Tacony Chess Club for Children is back at the Tacony Library on Tuesday, October 27, from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM. It's a weekly spot for kids to get a game in after school, and this session falls right in the middle of the October run. If you've got a kid who's been talking about chess, this is a low-stakes way to get them started.
One of the best things about it is that it's open to children of all ages and skill levels. That means it works just as well for a beginner who's never touched a pawn as it does for a kid who's already playing full games. There's no prerequisite experience needed to show up, and you don't have to worry about finding a partner—there'll be other kids there to play against. It's a good environment for a new player to pick up the basics without feeling out of their depth.
And you don't need to bring your own gear. The library provides the boards and pieces, so you just have to show up. That makes it easy to drop in without having to hunt down a set first. It's a simple, open-door setup: kids come in, grab a board, and play.

The club meets on Tuesdays from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM, and the Tacony Library is at 6742 Torresdale Avenue, right at the corner of Torresdale Avenue and Knorr Street in Philadelphia. Since it's an hour-long session, it fits right into a late-afternoon routine. If you're in the neighborhood on a Tuesday, it's a straightforward way to get a kid into a game.
