Children's storytime that pairs picture books with beginner yoga poses and mindfulness exercises for preschoolers.
Storytime Yoga comes to the Dwight Evans Library of West Oak Lane on Wednesday, October 28, at 11 AM. It's a program for preschoolers that pairs children's stories with beginner-friendly yoga poses and calming mindfulness exercises. As picture books are read aloud, the kids act out the characters and scenes with yoga movements—turning themselves into tall trees or fluttering birds. It's the kind of thing that keeps little ones moving while they listen, so they're not just sitting still for the whole story.
The venue itself has a bit of a story. The Dwight Evans Library of West Oak Lane first opened on August 26, 1957, and drew 2,000 visitors in its first hour. It was almost entirely destroyed by fire in 1980, re-opened in 1985, and was renovated in 2000 as part of the 'Changing Lives' campaign. If you're hanging around the picture book area, you'll find abstract mask-form sculptures by artist Charles Searles, which reflect his American, African, and Native American heritage.
