Free interactive storytime and playgroup for children aged 0-5 and their families at Haddington Library, with a short craft.
Librarian Meg is hosting a storytime and playgroup at Haddington Library on Wednesday, October 21, from 11 AM to 12 PM. It's part of the library's Storytimes series, aimed at children aged 0 to 5 and their families, though older siblings are welcome too. The session is interactive, and if there's enough interest, a short craft follows the program.
If you're not familiar with the spot, Haddington Library sits at the top of a hill and serves the Haddington-Carroll Park and Overbrook-Morris Park communities. It's a Carnegie library—the 18th one built with Andrew Carnegie funds—and it opened on December 3, 1915. The architect was Albert Kelsey, who also chaired the committee that developed the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The surrounding 60th Street El area was later designated the Haddington Historic District and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Inside, there are a couple of things that give the place some character. The Old Academy Bell from the nearby 'Yellow School House' still hangs in the main reading room, and a mural reimagines the outside courtyard with neighborhood children at play. The branch was renovated in 2001 as part of the 'Changing Lives' campaign, which brought Internet service to every branch in the system.
