Halloween-themed edition of the Free Library of Philadelphia's Fun Friday program with crafts and games for school-age children.
Spoooooky Fun Friday! is coming to Bustleton Library on Friday, October 23, at 3:30 PM. It's a special edition of the Free Library of Philadelphia's Fun Friday program, which brings crafts and games to school-age children on Friday afternoons. The library also runs games-and-gaming programs for all ages across its branches, so this fits right into the wider picture of what they do.
The library itself is located at 10191 Bustleton Avenue, in the Northeast. It serves the diverse neighborhoods of Bustleton and Somerton, not far from George Washington High School. The area was once thick with woodlands and a rich farming district; one theory says Bustleton grew around Busselton Tavern, a local watering hole established before the Revolution.
Bustleton's library roots go back to the turn of the 20th century. In 1905, the Free Library placed a 'traveling library' of 50 books in Tustin's Drug Store. Six years later, it moved to St. Luke's Chapel, where it stayed for 30 years. Citizens petitioned for an official branch in 1941, and one opened the following year in Union Hall. The current building opened on October 1, 1965, on land donated by the Philadelphia Board of Education: a one-story brick structure by Alexander Ewing and Associates that cost $337,300.
