Informal afternoon get-together for crocheters, knitters, sewers and quilters to share, collaborate and learn, with library staff on hand.
Sew What?! is back at the Parkway Central Library on Wednesday, October 21, at 2 PM. It's part of the Free Library of Philadelphia's series of informal get-togethers for textile crafters—crocheters, knitters, sewers, embroiderers, quilters, felters, and anyone else working with fabric and yarn. The library describes it as a clever and creative space to share what you're making with other crafters, to collaborate and to learn.
One of the best things about it is that you don't have to bring everything from home. The library stocks sewing machines, knitting needles, crochet hooks, and a stash of yarn and fabric, so if you're missing a tool or just want to try something new, you're covered. Library staff are on hand to show you how to use a sewing machine or other craft tools, and they can recommend instructional books from the collection if you hit a wall with a project.
It's not a class with a set curriculum, so you can bring whatever you're working on—a half-finished sweater, a quilt in progress, or a brand-new idea you've been meaning to start. The whole point is the social side: sitting around and making things while talking to people who get it. If you're a seasoned pro, it's a good place to hang out with other makers; if you're just starting out, it's a low-pressure way to get some help and see how other people work.
