Senior strength and conditioning class with hand weights, chair exercises and cardio work, with equipment provided.
Senior Strength Training is back at the Whitman Library on Tuesday, October 27, at 3 PM. It's a strength and conditioning class for seniors that works with hand weights, chair exercises and cardio work, and the library provides the equipment, so you don't need to bring your own. The class is sponsored by the Friends of the Whitman Library.
If you're not familiar with the branch, it's at 200 Snyder Avenue, at the corner of 2nd and Snyder in South Philly. The building opened on January 24, 1977, and got a renovation in 2000 as part of the 'Changing Lives' campaign, which refurbished branches and brought Internet service to them. The library and the neighborhood around it take their name from the nearby Walt Whitman Bridge. Back in 1854, the area was part of Passyunk Township and was mostly marshland where many residents raised pigs.
South Philadelphia tradition still lives here: the Mummers originated in the area south of Moore and between the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers, a stretch known as 'the Neck.' The library's meeting room hangs scenes of South Philadelphia painted by the Philadelphia watercolorist Howard N. Watson. It's a good spot to hang out in the neighborhood, and this class is one of the programs they run for seniors.
