Annual fall celebration of Pennsylvania's scrapple with exclusive menu items, local vendors, live entertainment and cooking demonstrations at Reading Terminal Market.
Reading Terminal Market hosts the Scrapple & Apple Festival on Saturday, October 17, from 10 AM to 5 PM. It's the market's annual fall celebration of scrapple, the Pennsylvania Dutch breakfast meat that started from the need to waste nothing and use every part of the animal. Since then, it's become one of the state's most recognizable regional foods, especially across Philadelphia and the southeastern part of the state.
On the day, more than 20 market merchants serve limited-edition scrapple dishes available only then, alongside apples sourced from local Pennsylvania orchards. There's live entertainment and cooking demonstrations throughout the market, so you can graze your way through the stalls rather than sticking to one spot. The market itself bills itself as America's largest and oldest continuously operating public market, and CEO and General Manager Annie Allman calls the festival a "beloved event that celebrates the unique culture of Philadelphia."
The weekend is bookended by the Scrapple Sculpting Contest. A dozen contestants are given 90 minutes and six pounds of scrapple each to carve Market-themed sculptures, which visitors then judge. It's a strange sight—carving a breakfast meat into a sculpture—and one of the more distinct things the market does each autumn.
