Guided tour of Laurel Hill East following the graves of Edgar Allan Poe's friends, associates and foes, as a Halloween attraction.
Laurel Hill East is hosting Nevermore: Edgar Allan Poe Connections on Saturday, October 31, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. It's a guided tour led by Russ Dodge that follows the trail of Edgar Allan Poe through the cemetery, stopping at the graves of his friends, associates, and foes who are buried here in Philadelphia.
Poe spent his most productive years in the city, and while the tour can't confirm or deny whether he ever stepped foot inside Laurel Hill himself, the cemetery was a newly opened necropolis when he lived here. It drew hundreds of visitors back then, and the tour suggests its graves and gardens may have inspired his tales. The walk is part of Laurel Hill East's October programming, which pairs the burial grounds with tales of restless spirits.
The cemetery is presented as a naturally atmospheric Halloween setting, grounded in Philadelphia's real historic landscape rather than a staged attraction. Old trees and burial grounds give the ghost stories a genuine sense of place, so it's more of a stroll through the city's history than a typical haunted house experience.
