A 300-square-foot pop-up micromuseum exploring the character and conduct of a Philadelphian through interactive exhibits and artifacts.
Museum of the Philadelphian is open in Fishtown through November 1, a pop-up micromuseum that treats the city's most infamous habits as high art. It's run by Architects of Human Connection Experience out of what was head curator Brian Adoff's studio at 454 E. Girard Ave., and it's framed as a serious institution about the conduct and character of a Philadelphian—and a love letter to the city.
The exhibits lean into the things people usually make fun of us for: decades of booing and throwing objects, and the tradition of climbing greased poles. Adoff reads that behavior as the mark of people who don't wait for permission and care far too much. The displays include The Booing, The Thrown Objects, and The Demise of a Hitchhiking Robot. There's a snowball from 1968 that's still frozen, the rearview mirror from filmmaker Ted Passon's car that flipped during the 2008 World Series celebrations, and a floor-to-ceiling papier mâché pole to grease. You can also sign The Register of Philadelphians, which lists names from Benjamin Franklin to Alexander Tominsky and crossing guard Jamele Ransom.
To get your name on that list, you have to share the five qualities Adoff says make a true Philadelphian: don't wait for permission, decide for yourself what's worth doing, keep going whether encouraged or not, don't care what others think, and believe in your heart that the work is needed. It's a small space—about 300 square feet, holding around twelve visitors at a time—and it's open to all ages, with wheelchair access via a temporary ramp.
