Afternoon screening of a newly released film in the downstairs meeting room of the Philadelphia City Institute library branch, aimed at adults and seniors.
The Philadelphia City Institute is hosting its Movie Matinee on Wednesday, October 21, at 2:00 PM. It's a screening of a newly released film in the downstairs meeting room, aimed at adults and seniors. If you want to know the title before you head over, you'll need to contact the library directly.
The matinee is part of the Free Library of Philadelphia's citywide programming, which puts on more than 28,000 programs for all ages every year. The City Institute itself is a branch on the west side of Rittenhouse Square that serves Rittenhouse Square, Fitler Square, and Center City west of Broad Street. It's run by a non-profit Board of Managers that has supported a free library in Center City since 1855. The branch has moved a few times: it opened at the northeast corner of 18th and Chestnut Streets, moved to 218 S 19th St in 1924, and has been at 1905 Locust Street since 1956. It joined the citywide Free Library of Philadelphia system in 1944.

In its early years, the library did more than just lend books. It played a civic role in the neighborhood, hosting weekly lectures by prominent Philadelphians and running free night schools—at first for young men, and soon after open to women as well. That tradition of offering something for the community continues with the matinee, which brings a new release to the downstairs meeting room for a midday audience. The screening starts at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, October 21, at Philadelphia City Institute, 1905 Locust Street—19th and Locust on W. Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia, PA 19103-5730.
