Free online members' tour of the 1923 Barnes modern art exhibition, looking at which works remain in the collection and how they were received a century ago.
The Barnes Foundation is hosting a members-only online tour on Wednesday, October 28, from 2 to 3 PM, titled Firestorm! Outrage! Dr. Barnes's Scandalous 1923 Philadelphia Exhibition. It's a look back at one of the most contentious moments in the collection's history, and since it's online, you can join from home.
To get the full picture, you have to go back to April 1923. That's when Dr. Albert Barnes first unveiled his collection of modern European art to the American public at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. The reaction was almost immediate and pretty harsh: critics panned the works, and a public clash broke out between Barnes and the Philadelphia press over modern art, good taste, and who actually had the authority to decide what belonged in a museum. It wasn't just a disagreement about a few paintings; it was a fight over the very idea of what art should be.
A century later, the tables have turned. Many of those same paintings and sculptures are now considered masterpieces and are still on view in the Barnes galleries. The tour lets you see which of those works survived in the collection, hear more about their stormy reception, and look at them through the eyes of a 1923 audience. It's a chance to see the same pieces that once caused a scandal, but with the benefit of knowing how the story ended.

The whole thing is framed within the nation's 250th anniversary, as a broader look at how American audiences have defined, challenged, and changed cultural values over time. The tour runs from 2 to 3 PM on Wednesday, October 28, and it's free for members, though registration is required.
