A public event recreating the Rocky training scene with a photo op, DJ, and Rocky-themed activities, with Filbert Street closed for the occasion.
Reading Terminal Market is bringing a piece of movie history to life on Saturday, October 24, with the Meat Market Challenge. It's a public recreation of the scene from Rocky where the character trains by punching slabs of frozen meat, and for the day, Filbert Street will be closed for the occasion. A cut of beef will be hanging over the road as a photo op, and you can step up and spar yourself.
Taking part in the sparring costs a $20 donation, which goes to the RTM Pantry and Sharing Excess, a hunger relief organization. If you're one of the first 50 guests, you'll walk away with a free RTM logo beanie. Alongside the punching, there's a Rocky look-alike contest, a live DJ, and Rocky-inspired treats to eat while you watch.
The day is part of Rocky Season 2026, an eight-week citywide celebration running from September 29 to December 3 that marks the 50th anniversary of the first Rocky movie, the 1976 Academy Award winner for Best Picture. The whole season leans on the city's own Rocky geography: the original statue now stands at the 72 stone steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the climb Balboa made in under 12 seconds, and the fictional boxer was loosely based on real Philly champion Joe Frazier.
