Montreal artist Marci (Marta Cikojevic) plays PhilaMOCA with her band TOPS on her 'Mask Lady and Late Night Girl' tour.
Marci plays PhilaMOCA on Tuesday, November 17, as part of her Mask Lady and Late Night Girl tour. Marci is the stage name of Marta Cikojevic, a Montreal artist and longtime member of the soft-rock group TOPS. She's touring her new album, Mask Lady and Late Night Girl, which she describes as a record of party-girl anthems. She made it again with TOPS bandmate David Carriere.
This one pulls from a different place than her previous work. While her 2022 self-titled album established her as a solo artist on the blueprint of 80s power balladeers like White Snake and Def Leppard, driven by vintage synths, Mask Lady and Late Night Girl looks toward Y2K-era pop figures like Uffie and Kesha. One of the tracks, "Chaotic Princess," was written and produced with Mike Silver, who records as CFCF.
Between the two records, you can see the shift: the first one leaned into the big, synth-heavy balladry of the 80s; this one moves toward the dance-floor energy of the early 2000s. Both come from the same Montreal scene, and both share that same fondness for a specific kind of pop artifice.
