Weekly chess club for school-age children and teens to learn, practice and play chess, with sets provided by the library.
The Kids and Teens Chess Club meets at the David Cohen Ogontz Library on Tuesday, October 20, at 4 PM. It's part of the Free Library of Philadelphia's chess programming, which they run alongside a whole range of other programs for all ages. The club is open to school-age kids and young adults, and the whole point is to learn, practice, and play chess—an ancient board game with roots in India going back 1,500 years. Any skill level is welcome, and the library provides the sets, so you don't need to bring your own board to get a game going.
The club meets most Tuesdays, so if you can't make this one, there's usually another chance coming up soon. It's a good spot for anyone who's always wanted to pick up the game but didn't know where to start, or for someone who already knows the basics and just wants a regular place to play.
Every week we pick 🏆 the 5 best 🏆 things to do in Philadelphia and send them to your inbox. Just one weekly email, no spam.

The David Cohen Ogontz Library serves the Ogontz and Belfield communities. It's located at 6017 Ogontz Avenue, at the corner of Church Lane and Ogontz Ave. The building has a bit of a story behind it: first requested in 1961, it didn't actually open until February 10, 1997. It's named after Chief Ogontz, whom Civil War financier Jay Cooke met as a boy and after whom he named his Oak Lane mansion. David and Florence Cohen helped push the project forward with petitions and a meeting at their home, and back in the 1960s and '70s, the area was served by a bookmobile. The club runs at 4 PM on Tuesday, October 20, at 6017 Ogontz Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19141.
