Free English for daily life course for beginners, held on Mondays and Thursdays at the Walnut Street West Library.
Intermediate English is running at the Walnut Street West Library on Mondays and Thursdays from 3:00 to 4:30 PM, and it's open all the way from September 21 to December 3, 2026. It's a beginner-level course focused on English for daily life, and the sessions cover listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The goal is to build confidence in the basics, so it's geared toward people who want to get more comfortable with the language in their everyday routines.
The library hosting it is a West Philadelphia landmark. The Walnut Street West branch has served the neighborhood since 1895, opening on May 28 of that year as the city's fifth public library branch and becoming part of the Free Library on January 1, 1896. The building it's in now opened on June 26, 1906, as the first of thirty libraries funded by an Andrew Carnegie grant, built at a cost of $80,387.68 on land donated by banker Clarence Clark, whose will deeded the site to the city 'in perpetuity' as long as a library sat on it. A mural of West Philadelphia scenes by artist Paul Santoleri welcomes visitors, and the branch was fully renovated in 2004.

Because the course runs twice a week over several months, you can drop in when it works for you rather than committing to every single session. It's free and there's no registration required, so you just show up. The library is at 201 South 40th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104, and the classes run 3:00 to 4:30 PM on Mondays and Thursdays through December 3.
