Halloween pop-up bar and haunted river attraction on the Delaware waterfront with costumed characters, themed cocktails and jump scares.
Haunted Pier has taken over Cavanaugh's River Deck on the Delaware River waterfront, running through October 31. It's billed as Philadelphia's first haunted river attraction and Halloween pop-up bar, a seasonal takeover of the river deck at 417 N Columbus Blvd. The whole thing is built around a local legend: The Red October, a ship that set sail on a stormy night in the 1800s from where Penn's Landing now sits and vanished without a trace. Locals still talk about seeing its red lanterns drifting under the water, and bartenders claim they can hear boots stomping across the deck whenever the fog rolls in.
The venue itself has a bit of history. It started as a floating beer garden with views of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge and has been a waterfront haunt for decades. Ken Hutchings, one of its co-owners, helped shape the surrounding area into a walkable village back in 2007, so the spot is well-integrated into the riverfront. This pop-up leans into the spooky side of that location, with glowing giants and an oversized illuminated skeleton on the deck, tombstone photo ops, and a menu of themed cocktails.
