Program for ages 7-17 that explores the connection between hair, identity and storytelling through interactive discussion, hands-on demonstrations and affirmations.
Hair Flair Experience: Hair Diaries is at the Dwight Evans Library of West Oak Lane on Monday, October 26, at 3:30 PM. It's a program for kids and teens ages 7 to 17 that looks at the connection between hair, identity, and storytelling through interactive discussion, hands-on demonstrations, time to practice, and affirmations.
The first session opens with reflection activities about hair textures and curl patterns while reading I Can Comb My Own Hair. Because it's part of a series, the organizers encourage attendees to come to all three sessions. If you miss this one, there are two other dates on the calendar: Monday, October 19 and Monday, November 9, both at 3:30 PM.
The venue itself has its own history. The Dwight Evans Library of West Oak Lane first opened on August 26, 1957, and welcomed 2,000 visitors in its first hour. It was almost entirely destroyed by fire in 1980, re-opened in 1985, and renovated in 2000 as part of the "Changing Lives" campaign. In the picture-book area, you'll find abstract mask sculptures by artist Charles Searles, which draw on his American, African, and Native American heritage.
