Guitar recital by Philadelphia composer and guitarist Thomas Schuttenhelm, showcasing instruments from the Free Library of Philadelphia's Musical Instrument Collection.
Thomas Schuttenhelm is playing a guitar showcase at the Parkway Central Library on Saturday, October 24, at 2 PM. It's a recital presented by the library's Music Department, and it's built around the instruments in their circulating Musical Instrument Collection—the kind of collection you can actually check out and take home.
Schuttenhelm is a Philadelphia-based composer and guitarist, and he's the Artistic Director of Network for New Music, one of the city's most active platforms for contemporary music. He spends a lot of his time championing the electric guitar's evolving role in new music through performance, collaboration, and education, and he frequently works across disciplines with poets, actors, and choreographers. This recital puts him in the spotlight on his own.
It's also a window into what the Music Department does. They put on more than 28,000 programs for all ages every year, and this one pulls from the library's circulating instrument collection, so you'll hear instruments that are part of the library's lending library. The audience is open to all ages, from school-age children to seniors, so it's as much a family outing as it is a date for anyone following the city's contemporary music scene.
