Evening hike along the trails of the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education as the Hunter Moon rises over the city.
The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education is hosting a Full Moon Hike: Hunter Moon on Monday, October 26, from 7 PM to 8:30 PM. It's a guided walk through the Center's trails, timed for the night the Hunter Moon rises over the city. If you've spent any time around the Schuylkill, you know the Center's acreage is one of the few places in Philadelphia where you can actually get away from the street noise and see the sky open up.
The hike follows the Center's trail system, so you'll be moving through the woods and open patches of the property rather than sticking to a single path. The whole thing is built around the moon: the Hunter Moon is the full moon closest to the autumn equinox, and the hike is timed so you're out there as it climbs over the city skyline. It's a slow-paced walk, not a trek, so it's more about taking in the evening landscape than hitting a certain mileage.
Since it's a night hike, you'll be seeing the trails in a different light than you would during the day. The woods change once the sun goes down, and the Hunter Moon provides a particular kind of glow that makes the landscape look a bit different than it does on a typical afternoon. It's a good way to get out of the city center and into the greenery without having to leave Philadelphia.
