Free daily fountain show at the historic Rendell Family Fountain in Franklin Square, with dancing water and coloured lights choreographed to music.
Franklin Square is running its fountain show from mid-April through October 31, with performances daily from 12 PM to 2 PM and from 5 PM until the park closes, every 30 minutes. It's free to watch, so you can just drop in whenever you're nearby.
At the center of the square is the Rendell Family Fountain, built in 1838 and restored by Historic Philadelphia in 2006. It's the oldest refurbished and functioning public water fountain in the country, and the longest-surviving fountain in one of William Penn's original five squares. The show turns that historic centerpiece into a display of dancing water and colored lights choreographed to music, with each performance drawing from one of eight songs that range from Philadelphia classics to current pop hits.
The square itself borders the city's Historic District, Old City, and Chinatown, and covers seven acres of parkland overseen by Historic Philadelphia. Along with the fountain, you'll find the Parx Liberty Carousel, the Philly Mini Golf course, and the SquareBurger. If you're already in the area for any of those, the fountain show is an easy addition to the afternoon.
