Intergenerational drop-in fiber arts session at Kingsessing Library where a librarian leads weekly crafts like pom-poms, yarn dolls, crochet and finger or mushroom knitting.
Fiber Craft Fridays is back at Kingsessing Library on Friday, October 23, and it's one of those low-pressure, drop-in things that's actually worth showing up for. The library opens up the children's area to yarn starting at 3:30 PM, and from 4 PM, Librarian Rachel leads a short fiber art craft. If you're not a regular, the format is simple: you can roll in whenever you like during the afternoon, hang out with some yarn, and then join in when the guided project kicks off.
The projects rotate, so what you make depends on the week. You might spend the hour making pom-poms and yarn dolls, or learning the basics of crochet if you've never picked up a hook before. There's also finger knitting and mushroom knitting on the table. If you're already a pro with a crochet hook or knitting needles, you're encouraged to bring your own work and share what you know with the next generation—it's as much about the chatting and the teaching as it is about the actual making.
One of the best things about it is who it's for. It's an intergenerational program, which is a fancy way of saying it's open to all ages. That means babies and toddlers can be there alongside school-age kids, young adults, adults, and seniors. It's the kind of space where a toddler playing with a scrap of wool and a senior with a lifetime of knitting experience can be in the same room, both working on their own thing.

If you want to stop by, the library is at 1201 South 51st Street in West Philly. The children's area opens to yarn at 3:30 PM, and the guided craft starts at 4 PM. It's a drop-in session, so you don't need to commit to the whole afternoon—you can just pop in when it works for you.
