Free fall migration bird walk led by expert birder Holger Pflicke, open to all skill levels, with binoculars and field guides loaned by the Free Library of Philadelphia.
Pennypack Park hosts a fall migration bird walk on Thursday, October 22, from 5:00 to 6:30 PM. The walk is led by expert birder Holger Pflicke, who'll guide the group through the park to spot birds passing through on their way south for the winter. It's part of the Free Library of Philadelphia's Environment and Nature programming, run in partnership with BirdPhilly.
It's open to everyone, regardless of skill level, so you don't need to know your warblers from your wrens to join in. The route sticks mostly to flat, well-traveled paths and takes about one to two hours, making it an easy outing for a weekday evening. If you're coming without gear, the Free Library loans out Birding Backpacks—complete with binoculars, field guides, and trail maps—at all its branches, with a limited number available at each walk. You're encouraged to bring bug repellent and water, and it's worth keeping in mind that restroom access is limited or unavailable along the way. The walk runs rain or shine, cancelled only for downpours and storms.
