English language class for learners that combines reading, writing and speaking in English with cooking a meal together.
Edible Alphabet is back at the Lillian Marrero Library on Friday, November 6, for another session of its cooking-based English class. It's part of the library's Culinary Literacy series, which pairs language learning with practical life skills. The idea is pretty straightforward: the kitchen becomes the classroom, and instead of sitting through a lecture, you spend the session reading, writing, and speaking in English while cooking a meal with a group.
If you're learning English, it's a way to pick up the language in a setting that feels more like real life than a textbook. You'll be working through recipes, talking through the steps, and chatting with other people in the room, all while actually making something you can eat. It's less about drills and more about using the language for something concrete.
That's where the Culinary Literacy part comes in. The series is built around the idea that learning a language is easier when it's tied to a practical skillβin this case, cooking. You're not just learning vocabulary for the sake of it; you're learning the words for the ingredients you're chopping and the techniques you're using. It's a hands-on approach that lets you practice speaking and listening in a natural way.

The session runs on Friday, November 6, from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM, and it's free to attend. If you're looking for a low-pressure way to work on your English and don't mind spending a few hours in the kitchen, this is a good place to start.
