Free screening of the classic James Dean film 'East of Eden' at the Parkway Central Library.
Parkway Central Library is screening East of Eden on Saturday, November 21, at 2 PM. It's a free showing of the 1955 classic, and it's taking place in Philbrick Hall, inside the library's main building at 1901 Vine Street, between 19th and 20th Streets on the Parkway.
If you've never seen it, East of Eden is the movie that made James Dean a household name. It's an adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel, and Dean plays Cal, the restless, misunderstood son who spends most of the film fighting for his father's approval. It's a heavy family drama about two brothers and the tension between them, and Dean's performance is the thing everyone still talks about—the brooding, volatile energy he brought to the screen. Seeing it in a theater is a different experience than catching it on a TV at home, especially with the black-and-white cinematography and the way the story builds.
Because it's a free screening, it's an easy one to drop into on a Saturday afternoon. You don't need to buy a ticket or plan far in advance; you just show up at the library and take a seat. It's a good way to spend a few hours if you're into old Hollywood or just want to see one of the most famous performances of the fifties on a big screen.
