Double feature screening of Henry Hanson's films 'Dog Movie' and 'Puppygirl' at PhilaMOCA.
PhilaMOCA is hosting a double feature of filmmaker Henry Hanson's work on Sunday, October 18, with two of his films playing back-to-back: Dog Movie and Puppygirl.
Dog Movie (2024) was Hanson's improvised, microbudget debut feature. He describes it as "the trans Curb Your Enthusiasm," and Autostraddle called it "really, really funny... an astute portrayal of very recognizable queer people." It's the kind of low-budget, character-driven comedy that relies on the awkwardness of the situation and the people in it rather than a tightly plotted script.
Puppygirl (2026) is Hanson's newer project, a gonzo documentary that follows a semi-delusional trans woman who sets out to undo years of sexual repression by performing in puppygirl fetish porn. It's a different beast from the firstβa documentary that leans into its subject matter with a raw, direct approach. Seeing them together gives you a look at two very different ways Hanson works with trans subjects: one an improvised comedy, the other a gonzo documentary.
