BYOB dinner and screening of the documentary 'Hidden Letters' about Nüshu, a once-secret written language of China, at Frieda.
Frieda is hosting a dinner and screening of Hidden Letters on Tuesday, October 20, at 320 Walnut Street. It's a two-part evening: the film runs first, and dinner follows.
Hidden Letters is a documentary by Violet Du Feng, released in 2022. It runs 86 minutes, filmed in Mandarin Chinese with English subtitles. The film centers on Nüshu, a once-secret written language used by women in China. It was calligraphed onto folded fans and handkerchiefs as hidden letters, a way for women to share stories and express solidarity during a repressive era when many were denied literacy. Du Feng follows two contemporary women who find solace in the script, and the film draws a line between that traditional Chinese womanhood and contemporary feminism.
The dinner comes after the screening. The menu is a mixed green salad, a mushroom and chicken casserole with rice pilaf—with a vegan apricot and chickpea vegetable tagine as the alternative—and carrot cake, with a vegan fruit salad for dessert. It's a BYOB affair, so you can bring whatever you'd like to drink. The whole thing is run as a single ticket: the film and the dinner together.
