Dance Cuban Salsa! Rueda de Casino classes

Philly P'arriba is holding Rueda de Casino classes at the Parkway Central Library on Thursday, October 29, starting at 6:30 PM. The class takes place in the Music Department, Room 126, at 1901 Vine Street, between 19th and 20th Streets in Center City. It's a free class, so you can just show up and join in.

If you've never heard of it, Rueda de Casino is a style of Cuban salsa that works in a circle of constantly rotating partners. The name comes from the Spanish word for wheel, and that's exactly how it plays out: you dance with one person, then a call sends everyone shifting to the next partner in the ring. High-energy calls drive the whole thing, turning the dance floor into a whirlwind of rhythm and laughter. It's less about a single couple and more about the whole group moving together.

There's a bit of history behind the style, too. Rueda de Casino blends Latin and Afro-Cuban rhythms and grew out of a determination to build community during a challenging political climate. That same spirit carries into the classes today. Philly P'arriba describes the rueda as a way of building joy, community, and connection, and they keep the doors open to all levels—new dancers and experienced ones are equally welcome. You don't need a partner to get started; the whole point of the rueda is that you'll end up dancing with everyone in the room.
