Crucial Device, a Philadelphia industrial synth-punk band led by Steve Saputelli, plays Kung Fu Necktie with support from Indigo Ranch and David E. Williams.
Crucial Device play Kung Fu Necktie on Thursday, October 22, with Indigo Ranch and David E. Williams opening. It's a local bill, and the headliners are a Philadelphia band that formed here in 2022.
Crucial Device is led by Steve Saputelli, who fronted the 90s industrial-cyberpunk group Punch Drunk. He's a multi-instrumentalist and basement studio producer, the great-nephew of Philadelphia Orchestra cellist William Saputelli, and at one point built and performed with his own home-made animatronic. He's joined on guitar and composition by circuit bender David Talento, known for Music For Isolation Tanks, Tony Violence, and Altruistic Suicide, and on live electronic drums and additional composition by scene historian Paul (Mo) Polidoro, who has played in Replikant, Worst Ones, and Klockenhouzer. Between them, they've touched a good chunk of the city's electronic and underground history.
They describe their sound as industrial synth-punk, blending upbeat industrialized rhythms, stark synth textures, and dark thrash elements. The influences they cite run from Devo and Gary Numan to the Ramones and the Circle Jerks, and they lean on the legacy of the Philly underground. It's a mix of synth-driven textures and punk energy, with the industrial side providing the rhythmic backbone.
