WHYY Studios is hosting a screening and panel discussion on Crime and Punishment in America on Thursday, November 12, from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM. The evening starts with a showing of the film, followed by a conversation about the American criminal justice system.
Crime and Punishment in America is a four-part documentary directed by Lynn Novick, executive produced by Ken Burns and Sam Pollard, and narrated by Keith David. It traces the U.S. criminal justice system from the colonial era to the present, following the origins of prisons and policing and how the system shapes media, economics, and politics. The screening is followed by a panel discussion hosted by Cherri Gregg, co-host of WHYY's Studio 2 and creator and executive producer of the Emmy-winning Good Souls Project.
Joining Gregg on the panel are series director Lynn Novick and Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, who was reelected to a third term in January 2026 and has championed bail reform and the end of the death penalty. Novick has directed more than 100 hours of PBS programming with Ken Burns, including The Vietnam War and Prohibition, and has garnered 19 Emmy nominations.
