Afternoon of craft activities for kids of all ages at the Charles Santore Library in South Philadelphia.
Crafternoon for Kids is at the Charles Santore Library on Thursday, October 22, starting at 3:30 PM. It's a drop-in craft session for kids of all ages, and the library welcomes everyone to come in and make something. Even the littlest ones can join in—they'll have coloring and other easy activities to keep them busy while the older kids take on the bigger projects.
The library is at 932 South 7th Street, right at 7th and Carpenter Streets in South Philadelphia. It's a neighborhood spot that serves Bella Vista, Queen Village, and Hawthorne, and it sits just a few blocks from the Italian Market. If you're coming from outside the immediate area, it's an easy enough walk or ride into the heart of the neighborhood.
There's a bit of history to the place, too. The branch was renamed in 2004 to honor Charles Santore, a South Philadelphia native born in 1910 who was a former boxer, a Republican ward leader, and the founder of Municipal Employees Union Local 696. Before that, it was known as the Southwark Branch. The original Southwark Library was a Carnegie building at 5th and Ellsworth that opened on November 15, 1912; the library moved to this current location on November 1, 1963, and the building was renovated in 1998. The surrounding Southwark district has been known as Queen Village since the 1960s, and it's the oldest settlement in Philadelphia, with a Swedish charter dating back to 1638.
