Contemporary dance piece 'Sol Invictus' by Compagnie Hervé Koubi, a kinetic fusion of contemporary dance, hip hop, capoeira and martial arts.
Compagnie Hervé Koubi returns to the Zellerbach Theatre on Friday, November 20, with Sol Invictus, their first Philadelphia appearance in more than a decade. It's a kinetic piece that blends contemporary dance, hip hop, capoeira, and martial arts, all built around the idea of love as the guarantor of peace. The title comes from the 'invincible sun' deity, and the movement is set to a driving score by Mikael Karlsson, Steve Reich, and Maxime Bodson.
If you're not familiar with the company, they've drawn some high praise from the big critics. The New Yorker wrote that the dancers 'could be mistaken for gods,' and The New York Times said the company 'changes how you see the amazing.' Sol Invictus is part of the 26/27 dance series at Penn Live Arts, and it sits within a broader Philadelphia dance season that's bringing together a pretty wide mix: classical ballet, contemporary works, Indian classical dance, and jazz-influenced productions.
