Closing night screening of the documentary 'Dust Bowls and Jewish Souls: Another Side of Woody Guthrie' with a talkback and closing night reception, plus live music by Lorin Sklamberg of the Klezmatics.
The Weitzman is closing out the Philadelphia Jewish Film and Media Festival on Saturday, November 21, with a screening of Dust Bowls and Jewish Souls: Another Side of Woody Guthrie. It's the final night of the festival's 46th edition, which runs ten days of Jewish cinematic and digital storytelling with international films from around the world. The evening starts at 7 PM, and the screening is followed by a talkback and a closing night reception.
The documentary is by Steven Pressman and focuses on little-known stories rooted in American-Jewish history, looking at a side of Woody Guthrie that doesn't usually make the headlines. It premiered at the Toronto Jewish Film Festival and went on to win the audience award for Best Documentary at the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival, so it's coming to Philadelphia with some momentum behind it.
Adding a live element to the night is Lorin Sklamberg, who'll be performing during the event. Sklamberg has been the lead singer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist for the Klezmatics since the band started in the East Village in the mid-1980s. Over the years he's appeared on about 50 recordings with artists like Itzhak Perlman, Don Byron, Uri Caine, and Tony Kushner, so he brings a deep connection to the kind of music and history the film touches on.

Between the documentary, the live music, the talkback, and the reception, it's a full evening rather than just a single screening. The whole thing kicks off at 7 PM on Saturday, November 21, at The Weitzman.
