Chess club for school-age players of all levels, with some instruction, held weekly on Thursdays at the Nicetown-Tioga Library.
The Chess Club meets at the Nicetown-Tioga Library on Thursday, October 22, at 3:30 PM. It's a regular thing—they meet most Thursdays—so if you can't make this one, there's usually another chance coming up soon. The club is aimed at school-age players, and they welcome all levels, from kids who have never touched a piece to those who already know their way around the board. Some basic instruction is provided, which makes it a good spot for a beginner to pick up the game without feeling out of their depth.
The library itself has a bit of a story. It serves the Nicetown and Tioga communities and opened on April 16, 1961, in a remodeled Linton's restaurant at the intersection of Broad, Erie, and Germantown Avenues. The branch's roots go back even further: Nicetown residents started pushing for a library shortly after the Free Library received its charter in 1897, and on June 29, 1917, a new Carnegie-funded library opened at 1715 Hunting Park Avenue—the 12th in the Free Library system. A remodel in 1993-1994 expanded the first floor to house both adult and children's collections, a new preschool center, and public computers, and the 1998 'Changing Lives' campaign brought internet service to every library in the system.
