Free Halloween walking tour of South Broad Street led by Michael Bixler, a history lesson on old buildings and signs with costumes encouraged.
Michael Bixler is leading the Broad Street Boogie on Saturday, October 31, a Halloween stroll down South Broad Street that works as a then-and-now history lesson on the neighborhood's obscure buildings and locations. Bixler is the editorial director and chief photographer of Hidden City Philadelphia, and he'll be pointing out some of South Philadelphia's coolest old signs along the way.
The walk starts outside the mid-century modern headquarters of the Order Sons of Italy in America, which now houses Programs Employing People and the PEP Bowl bowling alley. From there, you'll head south toward the Boot and Saddle sign at Solar Myth, where the stroll ends. It's a two-hour walk that lets you see the street as it is now while hearing about what it used to be.
Since it's Halloween, wearing a costume is encouraged, and the walk is open to all ages, so it works as a family outing or something to do with friends before you head to a party. Free parking is available nearby, which is a nice perk for a South Broad trip.
