Broadway musical-comedy about Betty Boop, directed by Jerry Mitchell, at the Academy of Music.
BOOP! The Musical opens at the Academy of Music on November 17, running through November 29. It's a Broadway musical comedy centered on Betty Boop, who spends the show dreaming of an ordinary day off from her life as a super-celebrity in her black-and-white world. That wish sends her on a bright, bubbly adventure of color, music, and love in New York City, traveling from the world of 1930s comic pages into the city itself. Aliya Grace takes the title role, and local cast member Ava Madara is also in the production.
The creative team behind it is a heavy-hitting Broadway lineup. Jerry Mitchell, a Tony Award winner known for Kinky Boots, Hairspray, and La Cage aux Folles, handles both direction and choreography. The score is by multiple Grammy winner David Foster, with lyrics by Tony Award nominee Susan Birkenhead and a book by Tony Award winner Bob Martin. It's a production that's already earned some recognition: three Tony Award nominations, three Drama Desk Awards, and three Outer Critics Circle Awards. Its Broadway run played its final performance on July 13, 2025, so this is a chance to catch it here in Philadelphia after its New York run.
