Screening of the feature film 'Bookends' by director Mike Doyle, with a talkback moderated by Gary M. Kramer at the Philadelphia Jewish Film and Media Festival.
Bookends screens at the Philadelphia Clef Club on Saturday, November 14, at 7 PM as part of the Philadelphia Jewish Film and Media Festival. The night starts with the feature film, followed by a talkback with the people who made it: writer, producer, and star Noam Ash and director Mike Doyle. Gary M. Kramer of the Philadelphia Gay News will moderate the conversation.
Bookends follows Nate, who is forced to leave city life behind and move in with his grandparents after a bad breakup. His grandfather, Saul, is a Holocaust survivor showing signs of cognitive decline, and his grandmother refuses to acknowledge the early dementia. Nate finds himself torn between fleeing, his family responsibilities, and an unexpected romance with his grandparents' handsome doctor. It's a story that sits at the intersection of family duty, aging, and a new relationship, with the Holocaust survivor's experience as a backdrop.
Mike Doyle is a veteran actor who has worked with Clint Eastwood, Karyn Kusama, and Martin Campbell. He also wrote the short Shiner, starring Amy Ryan, which premiered at Tribeca and launched his directing career. His feature debut, Sell By, premiered at Inside Out in Toronto in 2019 and was acquired by Netflix as Almost Love, starring Kate Walsh, Scott Evans, and Patricia Clarkson. His next feature, Passing Through, premiered at the 38th Lover's Film Festival in Torino in April 2023. The talkback will be moderated by Gary M. Kramer, a film critic and author of Independent Queer Cinema: Reviews and Interviews.
