A presentation and discussion on the book 'Philadelphia in Color: 1950β1990' by the nonprofit Hidden City Philadelphia, moderated by Peter Barberie.
Hidden City Philadelphia is hosting a book talk at The Barnes on Sunday, October 25, from 1 PM to 2 PM, centered on their new book Philadelphia in Color: 1950β1990. The nonprofit's editors will be there to talk through the project, with Peter Barberie moderating the conversation.
Philadelphia in Color is a photographic history of the city, tracing the rise of color photography from the mid-century through the dawn of the digital age. It brings together more than 360 images by more than 200 photographersβa mix of established names and local amateurs. Among them are Stephen Shore, Denise Scott Brown, Laurie Olin, and Harvey Finkle, alongside dozens of people who just happened to be taking photos of the city during those decades. The editors have paired the images with essays that reframe the conversation about what kind of place Philadelphia was then, and what it might be now.
The book came out of a Kickstarter campaign that drew 414 backers pledging $38,533, so the talk is a good chance to hear from the people who actually put the collection together. If you've spent any time in the city, you know how much of its visual history is tucked away in old family albums and shoeboxes; this is one of those projects that pulls those fragments into a single, coherent picture.
