A 16mm double feature of the horror films 'White Zombie' and 'Invisible Ghost' screening at PhilaMOCA to mark Bela Lugosi's birthday.
PhilaMOCA is hosting Bela's Birthday Bash tonight, Tuesday, October 20, starting at 7:30 PM. It's a double feature of White Zombie and Invisible Ghost, both presented on 16mm film, and the whole night is a tribute to Bela Lugosi.
If you're not familiar with the films, White Zombie is Lugosi's first American feature, a 1932 voodoo-tinged horror that basically set the template for the zombie movie. Invisible Ghost follows it, and seeing them back-to-back on 16mm is a different experience than catching them on a screen at home. There's a particular flicker and warmth to film that you only get in a theater, and it suits this kind of old-school horror.
The night is presented by Exhumed Films, and it fills the screen at PhilaMOCA, a multi-award-winning art and screening space at 531 N. 12th St. The venue itself has a bit of a story: it's housed in a former showroom for mausoleums, which is a fitting place to spend a Tuesday night watching early zombie cinema. It's right in the city, so it's an easy trip if you're already downtown.

Between the two films, you'll get a good look at Lugosi's early American work, and the 16mm projection keeps the whole thing grounded in the way these movies were meant to be seen. The double feature starts at 7:30 PM at PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St, Philadelphia.
