A free, guided bird walk along the Schuylkill River Trail to observe fall bird migration.
Bird Philly is leading a guided bird walk along the Schuylkill River Trail on Sunday, October 18, from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM. The walk is called Bartram's Mile Fall Bird Walk, and it's free to join.
The timing is the whole point here. Mid-October is right in the middle of fall migration, when birds are moving south and stopping over in the city's green corridors on their way. The Schuylkill River Trail, particularly the stretch in Southwest Philadelphia, is one of the best spots in the city to catch them. Because it's a guided walk, you'll have someone from Bird Philly pointing out what you're seeing and explaining why these birds are passing through right now, rather than just guessing at every chirp from the brush.
If you've never been out birding, this is a good way to start. You don't need to be an expert or even own a pair of binoculars to get something out of itโthe guide does the heavy lifting, and you just follow along. It's a slow-paced morning on the trail, and since it's free, it's a low-stakes way to spend a Sunday morning outdoors.
